Dallaglio Cycle Slam Update

Here we are 5 days before handing in the bike and 12 days before flying out to Italy for the challenge.

Training has been going well with 1850 miles under the belt.

I have already raised £3110 (£3600 with gift aid) with a lot of generous contributions. With the Virgin Media charity matching scheme, I'll be well over the £4000 mark, which is what this is all about.

Now I have to do the real thing soon. Already feeling mentally and physically tired and I want to get the whole thing over and done with. I hope a week of rest will pick me up so that I can really enjoy the experience.

Dallaglio Cycle Slam

The training is going well so far with over 1600 miles under my belt. I am struggling on the climbs a little but never set out to be a "Tour" cyclist.

In case you are wondering, I'm the guys on the left with the blue helmet :)

Dallaglio Flintoff 2012 Cycle Slam update

I have finally reached the total 100 hours of cycling in just over 2 months.

Total mileage is over 1300 miles.

I would like to get 2012 miles under my belt for training and I have exactly 4 weeks till I hand my bike in.

700 miles in 4 weeks! I hope I don't get injured.

Dallaglio Flintoff 2012 Cycle Slam update

I've had a good couple of days of training with over 110 miles covered. Especially yesterday, we had some really good hills as well.

The fundraining is going really well too. So far raised over £1600 with a couple of events arranged. There is a coffee morning that Mrs A is organising. And, mid-March there is a cake sale as well. At least 6-7 people have been volunteered for baking cakes.

Dallaglio Flintoff 2012 Cycle Slam update

2 days of commuting into work and back means almost 100 miles.

The total mileage has gone past 475 miles over 3 weeks.

I need to step up the training more considering I only have 11 weeks left. The freezing weather doesn't help the training, but there are not many other options at the moment.

I must also turn up the weekend training rides even though the family commitments haven't helped so far.

The fundraising is going all right as well. The total has just gone over the £1000 mark. But there is still a long way to go. Feel free to help:

Dallaglio Flintoff 2012 Cycle Slam update

Another 53 mile ride yesterday, which took 4.5 hours.

I followed the same route as last week, but the climbs felt easier even though I didn't feel like going out in the first place.

Successfully climbed 6 category 5 climbs. Even though Category 5 is the easiest. The actual route has a number of Category 4 or harder climbs.

The Flackwell Heath climb was really hard though.

This week only I rode over 150 miles, and overall around 380 miles. Not even the distance I need to be doing during the challenge over the 5 days!

I also still need a lot of support on the fundraising side as well. A lot of promises but not many people have sponsored yet.

Thanks to those who supported me on http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AdilAkkus

Dallaglio Flintoff 2012 Cycle Slam update

#fb

Excellent luch toda with the rest of the lucky Virgin Media team to participate in the Cycle Slam.

Shame I missed the official lunch party last night, but I was busy cycling back home from work :)

We had an excellent lunch by Pizza Express (one of the sponsors of the Cycle Slam). And we meet Lawrence and Freddie. They are very genuine guys, and have a lot of stories to tell.

I have also learnt that the training rides every weekend have some excellent riders (mention of Tour de France) providing really good tips and advise.

We also had some pictures taken on our own and with Mr Dallaglio and Mr Flintoff. I was a bit embarrased when I put the cycling shirt back to front for the pictures.

Also, the guys are actually built-up and tall. I didn't realise until I stood in between the 2 for the photos.

Everyone was very passionate about the good work that
  • Dallaglio Foundation
  • AF Foundation
  • or Virgin Unite
carry out.

So, please sponsor me at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AdilAkkus

Dallaglio Flintoff 2012 Cycle Slam update

#fb Good mileage today. First time I cycled into work and back; around 48-49 miles.

I also changed to pedals to the cleats now as well; even though I've already lost one of the screws on the way back.

The fundraising is going well. Already reached £700 mark. I've got an article lined up in the Maidenhead Advertiser. Just need to take some pictures tomorrow with Mr Dallaglio and Mr Flintoff tomorrow at lunch.

Appleton Estate Agents Maidenhead will sponsor me, and I need to take some promotional stuff to the Maidenhead Rugby Club through family contacts.

There is still the family to sponsor.

There are so many ideas but not enough time to collect as much money for charity.

I should also chase the Maidenhead Cricket Club as well.

Dallaglio Flintoff 2012 Cycle Slam Update (Hill Training)

#fb Excellent session today of hill training and distance. Best so far.

In the morning, I had a 3 hour session with 5 hills (total climb of over 2000 ft) and around 35 miles of ride in just under 3 hours.

Had a quick lunch with the family at Braywick so that they didn't forget who their daddy was :)

Then I had another ride in the afternoon of 1 hour and 45 minutes to Old Windsor.

In total I seemed to have racked up 56 miles and over 2170 feet of climb:

Still a long way to go yet but and encouraging start after 10-11 days of training.

I feel comfortable with the long but not-sharp climbs. But I am not sure if my gears and the ratios will see me through the actual climbs. I'll need to get some advise.

Dallaglio Flintoff 2012 Cycle Slam

Training progressing well. I've now up to 43-mile rides and in total I've gone over 170 miles in distance. Still a big challenge ahead as I've nto done any hill training yet. And, I only have 3 months left.

Cycling update

Managed to cycle another 24 miles tonight. It took me 1 hour and 45 minutes, which is very pleasing.

Here's a similar route: http://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_1706594.html

Good start to cycling

I started with a  20-Mile cycle on my mountain bike last night, which took me just under 3 hours. The timing needs to improve a lot but I am happy with the distance for the first ride.

Dallaglio Flintoff 2012 Cycle Slam training started today

No time to loose. I haven't got the proper gear yet for cycling into work. So, I've started the training with an 8Km run at lunch time.

Even the knee injury seemed to hold up under pressure unless it is doing lateral movement.

Apparently the charity fundraising site is being set up for the individuals as well.

And, we're meeting Mr Flintoff and Mr Dallaglio in a couple of week's time.

Priority is to get the road bike and all the gear sorted so that I can get used to the equipment.

Dallaglio Flintoff 2012 Cycle Slam

Between April 23rd and May 18th 2012 England rugby international and World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio and cricketing legend Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff will undertake the ride of their lives.

They will cycle the 2,862km across Europe from the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games, Olympia in Greece to the Olympic stadium in London 2012 to raise money for

 for some amazing projects.

And, I have been chosen as one of the extremely lucky people to join them for 5 days in the 2nd leg of their journey crossing the Apennines into the heart of Italy:
http://www.dallaglioflintoff2012.com/stage2

Days of Riding: 5
Total distance: 728km / 455miles
Total climbing: 6,107m / 20,031ft

I now only got 128 days left, and I need some serious amount of fund raising and training fro the event.

So, your help in getting the word out, sponsorship and advice is really appreciated.
